New Jersey boasts a rich tapestry of historic buildings and homes, each representing a piece of the state’s architectural heritage. Preserving these structures requires a deep understanding of both their historical significance and the structural challenges they present. Structural Workshop has built a reputation as a leader in the structural preservation and rehabilitation of historic properties across the state, combining technical expertise with a respect for the architectural integrity of these buildings.
One notable project that showcases Structural Workshop’s expertise is the restoration of the Ackerman Farmhouse, located in Teaneck, New Jersey. The structure is a 1700s Dutch homestead listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Over the centuries, the farmhouse had been altered through ill-advised renovations and subdivisions that concealed much of its original design. Structural Workshop was instrumental in restoring the building to its former glory, focusing on uncovering and preserving the hand-hewn timber framework and two-foot-thick sandstone walls that had defined the structure for more than 200 years.
We worked with Fuller/Overby Architects to remove many of the non-historic elements that were added to the house over the years and modify a structure that pre-dates the American Revolution to both restore the historic parts of the structure and make the house more suitable for modern living.
This project was a NYCxDesign Interior Design Magazine Honoree 2024 and was featured in the The Wall Street Journal and Dwell.
Structures such as this are challenging due to their age, lack of standard codes or construction techniques, and lack of many components of a modern structure. Experience is very important when dealing with structures of this vintage.
Working in New Jersey for 25 years, we have seen every age of structure from those, such as this one, predating America, to brand new modern buildings and houses, as well as everything in between.
With extensive experience in structural preservation, Structural Workshop has become a trusted partner for those looking to protect and restore New Jersey’s rich architectural legacy. Our ability to navigate the complexities of historic structures ensures that these buildings can stand as both cultural treasures and functional spaces for years to come.
