Structural Workshop LLC was proud to be the Engineer for this truly one of a kind structure that had many unique features and challenges. The structure contains a 2 story vaulted open space that relies on structural steel rigid frames to resist gravity and lateral loads. The ends are all glass and needed to be supported with a thin and hidden structural steel backup system. The 2 story space contains a floating staircase leading to a floating “cube” that is hung from the rigid frames. Both the support system and lateral bracing system for the cube are hidden so the cube appears to float. The structure is more akin to a church than a residence, and the floating staircase and cube are unique features. This project won an AIA NJ Merit Award.
