When Santa Needs a Structural Engineer

Every December, people assume the busiest workshop in the world belongs to Santa. And while that may be true for toy production, there’s another workshop that sees quite a lot of action this time of year—Structural Workshop.

If the North Pole had a Facilities Manager, he’d be dealing with the same concerns our clients deal with every day:

  • A structure built a very long time ago
  • Constant freeze-thaw cycles
  • Heavy roof loads (reindeer have weight, folks)
  • And a boss who thinks cookies are a legitimate nutrition plan

For decades, Santa’s presence at the Plaza was a beloved seasonal tradition. Families visited year after year, waving up at the big guy as if he were a permanent member of Bergen County. When he was taken down more than 30 years ago due to deteriorating conditions and structural concerns, the community never stopped talking about him. This year, after a long effort to restore the landmark and bring him back safely, Santa finally made his grand return—bigger, taller, and even more cheerful than anyone remembered. You can read the full backstory here. And of all the engineering firms on the nice list… Santa picked Structural Workshop.

But bringing back a 40-foot-tall Santa isn’t as simple as dusting off a decoration and plugging in some lights. This Santa wasn’t going inside a climate-controlled atrium. He was headed outdoors, where December winds can whip, swirl, and occasionally try to send large holiday figures on surprise flights.

Whether it’s the North Pole or Northern New Jersey, buildings don’t stay safe and sound on holiday cheer alone.  They need real structural expertise.

Award-Winning Engineering (And Yes, We Will Brag About It)

Sure, our holiday stories may be whimsical. But our engineering? Very real, very serious, and, according to industry experts, very good.

Structural Workshop has been recognized multiple times for excellence in structural engineering and building restoration. We don’t just diagnose problems, we explain them clearly, outline solutions practically, and guide the entire repair or remediation process in a way that makes sense to owners, board members, property managers, and even elves.

We take the hard-to-understand and make it understandable.
We take the overwhelming and make it doable.
We make the complicated clear.

Our Work May Be Serious, But We Don’t Have to Sound Serious All the Time

Buildings crack, settle, shift, leak, creak, and occasionally do things that make people very nervous. When that happens, calling an engineer shouldn’t feel intimidating.

We believe in:

  • Straightforward explanations
  • Solutions you can actually use
  • Practical guidance through execution
  • A little humor to make the process easier

Because we may not be hauling toys through the sky, but we do help carry people through stressful building challenges every single day.

Holiday Lesson Learned

Even the most iconic traditions need a bit of reinforcement now and then.

So whether you’re an elf, a property manager, a building owner, or just someone who appreciates a 40-foot Santa standing proudly against a North Jersey winter—know this:

Good engineering keeps the holidays bright.
